  1. Sort the mail! Don't put those credit card ads and grocery store sales paper on the table. Straight to the recycle bin! The rest you're keeping should go in a single place that you take action from, one inbox to find it again.

  2. Shop until you don't drop but have enough energy to put it away. Boxes from your favorite online stores (we're looking at you, Amazon), and quick trips to Target turned into a load of bags. Put it away when you walk through the door and eliminate pile-ups of unopened purchases.

  3. Clear out when you shop. If you just couldn't let those shoes stay in the store, we understand. But come home and donate those pair, (or pairs) that don't light your fire, hurt your feet, or were hand-me-downs that you didn't ask for.

  4. Donate regularly; if you click the "buy now" button more times than you fill a bag for donation. The math is going to math, and more in and less out equals clutter.

  5. Leave it in the store. If you don't know where it will land in your space, don't even go there. Envision where it will live, and make sure you follow step number 2 when you get home. If you can't think of a place for it or willing to get rid of something to make space, leave it on the shelf. As the saying goes: "Don't start none, won't be none."
